Breast Cancer Awareness

With October here once again, it is important to highlight Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This annual worldwide campaign brings together thousands of organisations to further implement the education and research that goes into this devastating illness. October 18th is Wear It Pink day, with the aim to raise money and help make life-saving breast cancer research happen. It's also important to us here at Avenue Tennis that our members live healthy and happy lives, so here are a few risk reduction tips to help...

WALKING

Ditching the car for a day can have a great health impact, not only on the physical body but mentally and internally. 'People with two of the most common forms of cancer can cut their risk of dying from the disease by as much as 40% simply by walking for a mile a day', Macmillan Cancer Support has claimed. With this in mind, the risk of developing breast cancer can be minimised by incorporating this daily activity into everyday life. This is the perfect starting point to promote a healthy lifestyle if you are unsure of exercise.

SAUNA

Albeit not a physically demanding activity, a sauna can have fantastic health benefits. Better yet, here at Avenue Tennis we offer the use of our steam room, sauna and heated loungers included in every membership. Lawrence Wilson, MD, wrote, "If I were to single out one method to combat cancer, it is the sauna. It assists removal of chemical toxins and heavy metals, increases oxygenation, enhances the immune system, and reduces the radiation burden in the body." No excuses!

TENNIS

In terms of how our facilities at Avenue Tennis can help our members with leading a prosperous life, we recommend taking full advantage of our tennis and badminton courts. Tennis is the third most popular sport in the world and is played worldwide, and the health benefits of playing this non-impact sport are sky-high. With the high amount of cardio, it helps to lower body fat and improve muscle tone. The internal benefits of tennis would be decreasing blood pressure, stress and heart rates. The overall improvement in your physical and mental health work to minimise your risk of cancerous cells emerging.

Whilst it is a proven fact that breast cancer can affect women regardless of bodily health and physical activity undertaken, this post has outlined some of the ways that have been known to work on certain individuals, and can have a beneficiary factor and reduce the possibility in developing cancer.

If you know anyone who has been affected by cancer, or interested in getting involved, please visit Wear It Pink for more information – do something great and make life-saving research happen by supporting wear it pink on 18th October this year.
